Aku Taonga - sharing our history, sharing our taonga

Aku Taonga is a mana whenua course for Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), endorsed by the Ahuwhenua Trusts. It explores local kōrero tuku iho (ancestral stories) from a Taranaki iwi perspective, using Te Ōhākī a Te Wharepōuri (Aspirations of Te Wharepōuri) as its foundation. By the course's end, participants will understand how Taranaki iwi embody the aspirations of Te Wharepōuri as mana whenua.

Description

Aku Taonga is a mana whenua course for Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), endorsed by the Ahuwhenua Trusts. It explores local kōrero tuku iho (ancestral stories) from a Taranaki iwi perspective, using Te Ōhākī a Te Wharepōuri (Aspirations of Te Wharepōuri) as its foundation.

In the ōhākī, Te Wharepōuri describes Māori and non-Māori as aku taonga (my treasures), a concept vital for enhancing the mana of the whenua, people, and vision.

Participants will explore Te Upoko o Te Ika a Māui, Kupe’s travels, Taranaki iwi migrations, and settlement interactions. By the course's end, participants will understand how Taranaki iwi embody the aspirations of Te Wharepōuri as mana whenua.

 

During the course you will learn about:

  • The history of Te Whanganui-a-Tara from a Taranaki prespective.

  • Taranaki traditional boundaries in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.  

  • Te Ōhākī a Te Wharepōuri and how it is applied in a modern context.

  • The term ahi kā roa, what it means in the context of mana whenua and the significance of Te Ōhākī a Te Wharepōuri. 

  • Taranaki mana whenua entities in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.   

  • Kura Ahurea and the cultural services provided by the Ahuwhenua Trusts.

  • The history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
